The Preface to the First Edition, dated August 1901 at Klerksdorp Transvaal, says "The conception of this little work had its origin in the appreciation, by a portion of Lord Methuen's Division, of the publication of an account of the operations during his Lordship's march from Taungs to Klerksdorp in February last. So many officers and men expressed their desire to obtain a more extended and comprehensive account of the operations of the First Division, that the compiler resolved to put the work in hand. It must be obvious to any intelligent reader that in a little Transvaal village, which for the past six months has been practically in a state of siege, the difficulties of production, literary and mechanical, have been considerable. The compiler and his small staff are members of the local Town Guard, and spend every other night in some of the redoubts which encircle the town, on outpost duty…. The utmost possible care, however, has been observed to make the record accurate and complete. The compilation has been made from Lord Roberts' Despatch
