Mineralogist, geologist, professor of chemistry, mining engineer, lawyer, legislator and railroad executive, Keating studied science in Europe and America. Keating accompanied Major S.H. Long on the U.S. Expedition to St. Peters River and wrote a two-volume journal about it, and helped organize the Franklin Institute. As a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences Keating acted as a recording secretary and member of the publication Committee, from 1822-1826
