Independence Day Celebration at Valley Forge The July 4, 1915, Independence Day service at Washington Memorial Chapel was a grand and memorable event, attended by about three thousand people, including Governor Martin G. Brumbaugh, members of the Pennsylvania State Commission, and the Philadelphia Councilmanic Committee with their guests. The service took place in the grove adjoining the Chapel, a site made possible by a generous gift from the late Honorable W. U. Hensel and Mr. and Mrs. John A. Nauman, fulfilling Rev. W. Herbert Burk’s vision of a “Woodland Cathedral” for patriotic and religious observances. The band of the Third Regiment N.G.P., led by Edwin Brinton, performed a patriotic musical program featuring selections from Offenbach, Bach, Meyerbeer, Boito, and Safranek.
