Issue of monthly newsletter of the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge, PA. The dedication of New York Bay occurred on June 3, 1913, at the Cloister of Colonies. Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Garland led the service. The event included music, prayers, and a gathering in a grove near the Cloister. Bishop Garland called for $30,000 to finish the chapel and stressed the importance of honoring both soldiers and women of Valley Forge. New York Bay was recognized as the seventh and most beautiful bay in the Cloister of Colonies. It was constructed using Holmesburg granite, with Indiana limestone and Knoxville marble for other features. An open-air pulpit was introduced as a unique addition to attract summer visitors. The Colonial Dames of America presented New York Bay in 1913, following earlier dedications by various states from 1905 to 1912. Valley Forge’s historical importance was highlighted through a letter from Henry Woodman, which described the hardships endured by the Continental Army during the winter of 1777-78, including resource destruction and contrasting conditions between American troops and British forces.
