A volume in the On Active Service Series Ward Tales from hospitals in Britain. Ellen Chivers Davies was a V.A.D., organised by the British Red Cross. Men and women could volunteer to become volunteers in the voluntary aid detachments (VADs). Over time, both the detachments (groups of people) and the volunteers themselves came to be known as VADs. She volunteered to work in England from September 1916 and was appointed with the rank of Nurse, see details below. Earlier in the war, as a trainee nurse she had travelled to Serbia with a volunteer medical unit under the Serbian Relief Fund.
