Juliet Sophia Duffie Goodenow was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1853, one of eleven children of Phelix K. and Juliette Duffie. Her father, who emigrated from Ireland, owned the Dollar House Hotel in Kalamazoo. During the American Civil War he served for eighteen months as a Captain in the 19th Michigan Infantry, Company K, and her brother Malcolm served as a private and drummer in the same company. In 1878, on New Year's Day, Juliet Sophia Duffie married George Irish Goodenow, a wireless telegrapher and traveling salesman. They had three children. Mrs. Goodenow was very active in the Kalamazoo, Michigan community: in 1892 she was President of the Twentieth Century Club; in 1903 she initiated a petition signed by 27 women to encourage the Michigan House of Representatives to pass a pending bill which would allow women to be appointed as members of certain state boards. In 1906, as chair of the Industrial Committee of the Michigan State Federation of Women's Clubs, she initiated a petition to the Michigan Senate, on behalf of all of Michigan's women's clubs, recommending the enforcement of child labor laws, particularly in Michigan factories and also for paperboys who were often out
