The Foreword by the author says "These intimate records of " London in War-Time" were begun actually at the time when England entered into the Great War: namely, from August 4th, 1914, and ending on New Year's Day, 1919; they are all absolutely true. They were written originally to send to friends and relations on the other side of the world in order to keep them in touch with the inner side of our War-time experiences in London. They were not written for publication… We had great opportunities of helping in the Food and Health Problem. My husband's knowledge of Food-values and of Meat-substitutes and Health in general were of the greatest value to the Food-Control and other great War Centres that had to deal with the vital question of what to provide instead of other foods that ran short, especially on the Meatless Days.
