The work by Charles Manby Smith (1804-1880) was published anonymously and first appeared in 1853 (see Bib# 4103483/Fr# 832 in this collection). This highly plausible forgery was long treasured as evidence for printing and publishing activities in the mid-19th century (see the Printing Historical Society’s unsuspecting reprint of 1967 (Bib# 4103485/Fr# 834).
