In this piece of architecture from 1923, the Grand Master of Georgia, Joe P. Bowdoin, argues that the primary initiative for Masonic education must come from the "subordinate lodge." He contends that while a Grand Lodge can create plans, the real inspiration for and attainment of knowledge has to be driven by local lodge leaders, as the local lodge is where a Mason truly learns his duties. The author states that lodges must learn that the ritual is not merely a "dramatic performance" to be memorized "letter perfect." Instead, its true purpose is for the interpretation and explanation of Masonic principles, and that true Masonry lies in the proper application of its emblems. To put this into practice, he describes a new Committee on Masonic Education in Georgia. This committee's goal is to shift the focus from "grinding out of candidates" to truly "making Masons." They plan to create study courses and educational programs for lodges and district conventions so that members can learn the hidden truths of the fraternity and become more than just "poll-parrots" reciting the ritual.
