Much useful information can be obtained from the Queen's Regulations, and from the Field Exercise Book; but as the instructions published by authority for the use of our army are almost exclusively intended for peace service, they are likely to lead one into difficulties if adhered to in the field. Some few years ago, when Sir R. Airey was Q.M.G. of the army, he proposed to have a practical handbook for the staff, compiled by experienced officers of his department, and published for the use of the army.
