The author states that the pamphlet was based on a public lecture and published for the ' Clifton Committee for Promoting the Higher Education of Women' ( p.vii ), who commissioned the work because there was 'no treatise of the kind' already. The 'Clifton Association for the Higher Education of Women', as they are usually known, was founded by the educational reformers John Percival and his wife, Louisa Percival.
