Spence, Thomas: 1832-1900. From England to Canada, 1862; to Red River, 1866; became involved in local politics, and instrumental in calling a meeting favouring union with Canada; later a prime mover in sending an invitation to the Prince of Wales from the First Nations asking him to visit; settled in Portage la Prairie, 1867; organized a provisional government, Republic of Manitoba, with himself as president, but government soon collapsed; edited The New Nation ,1870; after formation of the province of Manitoba, became clerk of Legislative Council, and later of Legislative Assembly; census commissioner for NWT in 1881 and 1885; lived in California for some years engaged in immigration work; assistant registrar in Dominion land office in Edmonton, 1895-1900 ( Edmonton Bulletin , March 23, 1900; Robertson, A political manual of the province of Manitoba ).
