The author was Captain, 8th (Service) Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Australian War Memorial catalogue entry gives the author name as “Ironside, H. A. (Henry Allan), 1876-1951”. Second edition 1915. Probably first published 1914. Diagrams have not been unfolded to scan, so are of limited value. The Introductory says "Little information has so far been published in this country regarding the handling of machine - guns in sections, batteries, or brigades. Although the military textbooks clearly show what is generally required of the guns in attack, defence, pursuit, or retreat, there are no particulars given which will insure that the training in each battalion will approximate and that if the guns are massed the brigade machine-gun officer will find himself with sections trained to work on one system and by one signal code. During the last few years I have seen several regular and territorial maxim sections at work, and noticed that the nature of the advance, the method of coming into action, and the control, varied in each case, and that the signals
