About this book
The Love Letters of Ernst Haeckel – written between 1898 and 1903 – arranged from the correspondence by Johannes Werner and translated from the German by Ida Zeitlin
Author: Johannes Werner
Year: 1930
This book collects love letters between the German zoologist and naturalist, Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) and Franziska von Altenhausen (d. 1903). The romance began simply enough: in correspondence about natural history. It then blossomed into a passionate affair. The letters here track the ups and down of this relationship, as it evolved from celebrity-and-fan to lovers to collaborators. Franziska’s influence on Ernst is well documented here. She is an active contributor to his research programme, and she actively modulates his activities. It's a fascinating case of collaboration between intimate partners. It ended with Franziska's death in 1903.
