About this book

The Keynotes Series

Author: John Lane at the Bodley Head

Year: 1893

The Keynote Series is historically important as perhaps the first "magabook", a numbered series of all new fiction in a pocket size, issued on a roughly monthly basis. It was named after Keynotes by George Egerton, the first in the series, and was unique in the use of beautifully designed title pages and a key-shaped monogram for each author. Much of the art was provided by Aubrey Beardsley. The stories covered a wide range and were ground breaking in the use of so-called decadent or fin-de-siecle themes and styles.
