Semmens, John: 1850-1921. Methodist missionary; arrived in Winnipeg as assistant to Rev. George Young, 1872; moved to Norway House, 1873; opened Methodist mission at remote Nelson House, 1874; later at Berens River; after his return to southern Manitoba, stationed at Carberry and in Winnipeg; president of Methodist conference of Manitoba, 1892; principal of new Brandon industrial institute for educating Native children, 1895-1900; retired from principalship and ministry due to ill-health; inspector of Native agencies for Canadian government; secured surrender of 133,000 sq. miles in 10 adhesions in Indian Treaty No. 5; translated four works into Cree (Cochrane, The Canadian album ; Who's who in western Canada ; Riddell, Methodism in the middle west ; Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography ). // Isbister, William: 1836-1915. Born at Nelson House, and employed there by HBC for 46 years, for 15 of which he was post manager; active in the educational and religious work carried on by the Methodist Church among the Natives; died near Winnipeg. // McDougall, John: 1842-1917.
