In low-resistance standards capable of carrying large currents, the surfaces of the contacts through which the current enters and leaves must be large. In many cases the resistance depends, to some extent, on the manner in which the current leads are attached. In alternating-current measurements it is also necessary to know the inductance. The present paper points out the conditions which must be fulfilled in order that the resistance may be definite, or both the resistance and inductance be definite. The design of low-resistance standards is discussed, and the theory of the Thomson bridge using linear four-terminal conductors is given.
