The General Introduction includes the wording "The manuscripts are unique in that they deal with the lives of two men, father and son, whose public careers, taken together, are without parallel in this or in any other country. Here is the case of a highly successful naval commander and First Lord of the Admiralty having a son who was executed for neglect of duty, though himself an Admiral and a member of the legislature. Treason or cowardice, whether proved or alleged, have always been good grounds for executing naval officers of high rank, as the end of several Lord Admirals of the sixteenth century bears witness. … The manuscripts of Lord Torrington which form the first half of the Byng Papers begin with the year 1702, when he took command of the Nassau, and continue till his death in 1733. They therefore include the War of the Spanish Succession, 1702-13, his anti-Jacobite and Mediterranean operations, 1714-20, and his administrative career as Treasurer of the Navy and, later, as First Lord of the Admiralty, 1721-1733."
