During the First World War the various Battalions fought on the Western Front, in Gallipoli, Salonika, and Italy. Some battalions went to India, mainly on garrison duty, with some drafts sent to Mesopotamia. The 2 nd /4 th Battalion took part in the 3 rd Afghan War in 1919. The 1 st Battalion was part of the Razmak Force in Waziristan in 1922-23.
