The blush rose : voice and piano
Author: O'Hara, Geoffrey, 1882-1967
Year: 1917
[i] In the long long ago (So they tell me,) / In a garden that nobody knows. / Dwelt a bashful and sweet modest lily / And a simple old fashioned white rose. / They both fell in love with the west wind, / One evening twilight’s close / But the wind was in love with the lily / That grew by the side of the rose. [ii] In the night came the amorous west wind / All confused by the dark I suppose / And the kiss that was meant for the lily / Was press’d to the lips of the rose. / And ever since then. (So they tell me,) / Where-ever a garden grows, / There’s a paleness of grief o’er the lily / And a blush on the face of the rose, / There’s a paleness of grief o’er the lily / And a blush on the face of the rose.
