Schreiber has published results obtained by heating cylinder and compressor oils in a specially designed air-bath, to a high temperature, in an atmosphere of air, CO/sub 2/ or steam. The duration of these tests varied from 16 to 24 hours and the temperature from 200 degrees to 280 degrees C. The percentages of asphaltic material in the oil, before and after heating were determined; these showed that a great increase had occurred in the presence of air and Cd, but not when the heating took place in an atmosphere of steam. The author has investigated by a similar method, the behaviour of mineral oils of high boiling-point, designed for gas-engine lubrication, and in this paper details of his results%
