About this book
Singing for Radio WABQ
Year: 1925
Photograph of students performing on Haverford College radio station WABQ in Haverford, Pennsylvania circa 1925. College radio has a long history at Haverford College, with students in the Radio Club launching WABQ as a licensed AM station in 1923. WABQ aired live music, faculty speeches, remote broadcasts of organ concerts from a theater in nearby Ardmore, and a variety of other programming. These broadcasts were said to have reached 1500 miles away, with reports that programming had been heard in Maine and Michigan. In December 1926, the WABQ license was sold (by the students in the club), and broadcasting did not return to campus until carrier current stations (WHAV, later renamed WHRC) were built in the early 1940s.
