The earliest known literary work produced in the Mississippi Territory, The Last Campaign of Sir John Falstaff the II is a verse satire of the defeat of Col. James Caller's militia troop by Creek Indians at the Battle of Burnt Corn in July 1813. The heavily annotated poem reports rumors about Caller's military conduct, assaults his character, and reprints polemics that circulated in the territory. Elements of early 19th-century southwestern American humor are present.
