Samuel Stanhope Smith was born March 15, 1751 in Pennsylvania. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton University) and studied theology and philosophy under John Witherspoon. He was a Presbyterian minister and the founding president of Hampden-Sydney College (1775-1779). He then went on to teach and eventually became the 7th president of the College of New Jersey (1795-1812) until he was forced to resign. Smith died on August 21, 1819 in New Jersey. Follows the first book, and has lectures 21-30. The first few pages contain 4 lectures that appear to be separate from the class lectures then class lectures continue at lecture 21. While there is reason and cause to believe that these books were transcribed by John Croes, Jr., a student at the College of New Jersey (graduated 1806), we are not able to confirm this.
