Samuel Stanhope Smith was born March 15, 1751 in Pennsylvania. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton University) and studied theology and philosophy under John Witherspoon. He was a Presbyterian minister and the founding president of Hampden-Sydney College (1775-1779). He then went on to teach and eventually became the 7th president of the College of New Jersey (1795-1812) until he was forced to resign.
