About this book

Samuel Morse Petition for Extension of Patent

Author: Samuel Morse, Charles Mason

Year: 1860

Documents filed with Congress by Samuel Morse to attempt to extend his telegraph patent. He had received the patent in 1840, and the first document is a copy of the brief he filed with Congress in 1854, part of his successful campaign for an 7-year extension of his patent beyond the 14-year statutory term. The second document is the argument of Charles Mason on behalf of Morse in 1860, arguing for another 7-year extension. The final document is a petition from Morse himself, also in 1860, requesting such extension. In the end the patent was not extended further.
