The manual explains the optical laws of how projection works, how to operate diverse projection apparatus – magic lanterns (also called sciopticons or stereopticons), dissolving views, epidiascopes and film projectors. It treats the operation of diverse light sources, the manufacture of slides for projection including several possibilities for adding color. In another part, it explains how to use a magic lantern and projected images in a lantern performance to demonstrate physical, chemical and optical experiments as well as explain special effects achieved by animated slides.
