The Preface advises portions of the narrative had previously appeared in the National Review . The author was an officer of the Highland Light Infantry, but at the time of his capture by the Germans was attached to the South Wales Borderers. While he was a Prisoner of War, the majority of his time appears to have been spent in escape related activities such as tunnelling. He first spent eleven months in the Prisoner of War camp at Gütersloh, then Crefeld, next Schwarmstedt camp surrounded by impassable bogs, in the vicinity of Bückeburg, where he escaped with a companion, but was recaptured. Next the camp at Ströhen [English name Strohen] a 'Straf' camp (believed to be a punishment camp) where he spent five months; Freiburg, where he escaped but was recaptured. Next Schweidnitz in Silesia, where he escaped with a companion, from the camp and Germany, into the territory of the Austrian Empire, reaching Przemysl, Polish-Galicia, before being recaptured then sent to a Prisoner of War Camp in Salzerbad, Austria, where he remained until the end of t
