Digitised by Google Books from the collection at the University of Michigan https://books.google.com/books?id=ZOkwAAAAMAAJ The artist author was a Bombardier, 111th Howitzer Battery, 4th Division, Australian Imperial Forces. Prior to the war he had attended drawing and painting classes and “a promising career as an artist and illustrator was opening up for him” (page 37). In May 1917 he was dangerously wounded in the right hand, shoulder, and back by a high-explosive shell and it was necessary to amputate the whole arm.
