Rev. Ira Ingraham was ordained to serve the First Congregational Church in Orwell, Vermont. That church was originally gathered in 1789. Joshua Bates, who preached this sermon at Ira's ordination in 1820, was, at that time, the third President of Middlebury College, in Middlebury, Vermont. As is noted in this published copy of his sermon, Joshua Bates also preached this sermon at the ordination of Charles Y. Chase in Corinth, Vermont.
