(Picture order does not match description order) a) tan colored 4" x 9.5" envelope with pencil cursive handwriting written on the front: "NW Tallant Papers" There are also two illegible words written on the front - maybe another name? b) 5" x 3.25", torn on both ends, receipt with incomplete information. What we can see: On top: "San Francisco Jan." In top middle: "Received From: N.W. Tallant" In middle: "Four Hundred & Fifty" In bottom middle: "afc. T. H. Hobron" On bottom: "William" [Background on Hobron: Captain Thomas Henry Hobron - born in CT 9/15/1822. Died in San Francisco, CA 9/12/1889. Buried in Hawaii family plot. - Uncertain what this piece of receipt could be for exactly - perhaps shares in the sugar plantation? - Astoria connection: Capt. Hobron filed Articles of Incorporation with Nathaniel W. Tallant in 1887 for the "Columbia River Packing Co." He was a sugar plantation owner in HI. He apparently knew N.W. Tallant when N.W. was the manager of the sugar plantation (Waihee Plantation.) and perhaps in shipping markets like San Francisco. - Nathaniel's younger brother Eben Weld Tallant also managed a sugar plantation @1870 - ? - N.W. met Hila M.
