The Mems in the title is an abbreviation of Memsahibs, Memsahib being the Indian term for the lady of the house, a respectful form of address. The book advises IMPORTANT. ALL These recipes have been TRIED AND PROVED by the Writer in Seremban, Negri Sembilan, F.M.S. The author’s husband was William Edward Kinsey, a civil servant. From shipping records from 1921 and 1927 from The National Archives, Kew England, and available on the pay website Findmypast, it is apparent that Mrs W E Kinsey’s first name was Lily, and she was born c 1878 or 1879. From an index record from FreeBMD it is very likely she was born Lily Young, and the couple were married in Chelsea London in 1909.
