SYNOPSIS OF CONTENTS LECTURE I. The Apostles' Call 1 Introduction. I. Vocation. A question which lies at the root of all professional life, even of life itself, and although pre-eminently a question connected with Holy Orders, not to be confined to it The true question before us is, "In what direction can I best serve God?" Indications by which Vocation to the Priesthood can be discerned. A life-long desire. A sudden call, appealing to the heart. The encouraging verdict of friends. The gradual shaping of circumstances. These calls need testing. The special value of a Theological College for this purpose. II. The choice really rests with God. We do not choose, we respond. "Whom He would." In the case of the Apostles our Lord's choice was deliberate, not forced; not the acceptance of a generous and unthinking devotion. His choice of all His workmen is always deliberate.
