I can't say who they're defending against, but the testimonials in this 16-page insert certainly seem a bit defensive in tone. From a bound volume of miscellaneous issues (and so broken up, here). In some cases, the binding has made the gutter a bit tight to reach, and the scans may have some visible voids where straightening them has exposed this flaw.
