About this book

Ancient History of the Egyptians, Carthaginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes and Persians, Macedonians, and Grecians (Vol. 1 of 2) by Charles Rollin

Author: Victorian Vault

Year: 1842

This was THE main historical manual kept in American Households for much of the 19th Century. Self Education was a more common avenue towards Self Improvement in the 1800s as access to Higher Education was rather limited. Rollin's Ancient History was absolutely required reading for anyone who wanted to educate themselves in the "polite learning" of the time. Every young man lucky enough to be sent off to school would haul these volumes with him when he left home. Enlightened Parents would buy a set of Rollin's works for their children to study at home. Also you will find many great self made men of 19th Century America mentioning reading Rollin's Ancient History in their youth. This is the Cincinnati Edition in 2 convenient volumes. ALSO it has content that was deleted from earlier editions re-inserted by the editor. The best edition available.
