About this book

Postcard to Mrs. Esther Smith in Roseburg, Oregon, May 1906

Author: Lillie Smith

Year: 1906

Embossed greeting postcard (“TO MY DEAR MOTHER”) addressed to Mrs. Esther Smith in Roseburg, Oregon, postmarked Reston, Oregon — May 18, 1906. From the Wells Smith Steel Box postcard group. Most likely written by Esther’s daughter Lillie Leane Smith. Lillie addresses her mother as “Dear Mamma” and offers a small snapshot of daily life: she plans to send more cards, says she has been “on the bum” and feels nervous, mentions picking strawberries, and urges Esther to go to the circus and have some fun. (“On the bum” was common slang for being unsettled or living rough for a time.) The card also serves as a timeline marker within the wider collection, mailed one month after the April 18, 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which appears in the family’s later postcard trail.
