About this book

Possible Portrait of Edward Gray Young or Ambrose Garrett Young

Author: F A Smith

Year: 1878

An unidentified nineteenth-century portrait from the Vail Dear Steel Box, believed to depict either Edward Gray Young or Ambrose Garrett Young, brothers of Amanda Caroline Young Vail of Oakland, Oregon. The portrait was produced by F. A. Smith of Salem, probably during the late 1870s. A handwritten notation on the reverse appears to reference a Mrs. Young of Oakland, although the initials remain uncertain. The accompanying reflection examines the photographer, the inscription, the historical context of the Young family, and the evidence supporting the current working identification. It also discusses the use of an AI-assisted enhancement included for visualization purposes only and explains why the original photograph remains the primary historical record. Although the sitter has not yet been positively identified, the portrait represents an ongoing effort to preserve and document the people, families, and visual history of early Douglas County, Oregon.
