About this book

Plymley's Letters To Catholics Pdf

Author: Sydney Smith

Year: 1808

The liberal English wit, Sydney Smith, writes to his brother in the country not to worry about the threat of a Catholic invasion. Says he, “[T]hough the Pope is probably hovering about our coast in a fishing-smack, it is most likely he will fall a prey to the vigilance of our cruisers; and it is certain he has not yet polluted the Protestantism of our soil." He was wrong, but under the nom de plume of Plymley he reminded his Anglican preacher brother that he had every tenth porker (tithe) in the parish for refuting the Romanists, and thought him thus well enough supplied against the threat.
