This is a yellow-back issue of Nathaniel Parker Willis's People I Have Met; or, Pictures of Society and People of Mark, Drawn Under a Thin Veil of Fiction , which was first published in New York by Baker and Scribner in 1850. Willis was an American writer of prose, poetry and plays. The cover and title page give the book's title as Pictures of Society and People of Mark: Drawn Under a Thin Veil of Fiction , although even-numbered pages provide the short title People I Have Met in the header. This suggests the printing was made from stereotype plates of the earlier edition. Yellow-backs were published in Britain in the late-nineteenth century and were cheap volumes aimed at a popular audience. This volume was published in London around 1872. It includes 44 pages of advertisements, which can assist in dating the publication and learning what publishers thought would interest the book's readers.
