About this book

Peyton Harris Property Receipts

Author: Cocker, Neville Louise

Year: 1834

Receipt from C. Seyser to Peyton Harris, Grand Island (NY) Treasury Office, June 21, 1834; two Comptroller's certificates, Buffalo, N.Y., April 30, 1874, nos. 7384 and 6272, for properties purchased on Batavia Street (now Broadway) and Hamilton Street in Buffalo, NY. Peyton Harris (1791-1882) was likely born into slavery in Virginia, served in the War of 1812, and made his way to Buffalo around 1833, where he ran several successful businesses. He owned lot 71 on Grand Island and several properties in the City of Buffalo. These receipts are part of the Neville Louise Cocker Collection at The Buffalo History Museum. It is not known how Ms. Cocker (an art teacher, died 1979) came to have them. The rest of her small collection is offline and undigitized and can be seen by appointment.
