About this book
Petersons Magazine 1866 Vol 49
Author: VictorianVoices.net
Year: 1866
Peterson's Magazine was founded in 1842 to compete with Godey's Lady's Book . It was offered as a cheaper magazine ($2 per year instead of $3) - but the two are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Each magazine offered extensive coverage of the latest fashions, with hand-tinted fashion plates. Besides fashion, the magazine focused primarily on fiction and serialized novels, with a small selection of nonfiction articles (including pieces on cooking, embroidery and crafts, and housekeeping). The magazine began as Ladies' National Magazine and became Peterson's in 1848; in 1898 it was purchased by Frank Munsey and combined into the American edition of Argosy Magazine.
