Pavlick Tschepotkin and Elvira Christophornia were White Russian refugees from the city of Arkhangelsk. Tschepotkin, the author of the first half of the letters, served in the White Russian North West Army before fleeing to Estonia and Latvia where he worked odd jobs, received handouts from other White Russian emigres, and participated in black marketeering. While stowing away on the steamship King Alexander he was detained on Ellis Island, and deported to France.
