Broadly, the List is in respect of the British Army and Royal Flying Corps. The latter was in existence until the end of March 1918, then the Royal Air Force was established 1 April 1918. There are no Naval entries, or Royal Air Force entries. The Preface says “These rolls have been compiled in the Officers' Casualties Branch of the War Office from reports coming to the notice of the Military Secretary. They are published to enable information, which has from time to time been circulated during the war, to be available in one volume. In Part I the names are tabulated alphabetically, while in Part II they are arranged by Ranks. Any other method has been found impracticable. It has not been possible to give the number of the Battalion in every case, as officers changed battalions so rapidly that the Army List was not always a guide, and in the notifications of casualties battalions were not always given.
