This journal contains notes Mearns took from the time he joined Brigadier General George A. Crook at Fort Verde on October 1st to October 11 1884 in Arizona. Notes are supposed to continue to October 27th, but part of this journal is missing. Mearns provides detailed descriptions of the vegetation of localities traversed. Lists of birds seen (some of which were collected) are also included. Collector numbers 3361-3397 for birds. Mearns also lists mammals seen and collected, which are mostly small mammals like Gophers, squirrels, chipmunks, but also include larger animals like deer. Collector numbers 133-141 for mammals are included. Also included are sketches of specimens. Localities include Fort Verde (Camp Verde), Baker's Butte, General springs, Carrizo Creek, Forestdale, and Canyon Creek (spelled Canon by Mearns).Also included is "A Catalogue of Medicinal Plants Growing Wild in the Hudson Highlands, New York," December 10, 1884; "Memorandum of Society Memberships, 1878-1889."
