Resident of New Berlin, Ontario; sent to Manitoba by Mennonites in Russia to report on lands, 1872; favourable report led to the founding of the first Mennonite settlements in the West; interested himself in the welfare of these immigrants, and made a total of thirty trips to Manitoba, usually on business connected with the settlers. // Shantz was sent out to inspect land for the Russian Mennonites who subsequently settled in southern Manitoba.
