Dr. John B. King (1808-1889) was born on May 23, 1808, in Nantucket, Mass. He was a doctor for island residents and foreign seamen until his death on July 27, 1889. He was married to Mary B. Mitchell (1823-1904) and had three children, Alfred R. King (1843-1867), Robert B. King (1855-?), and Gertrude M. King (1858-?). This case book includes detailed description of symptoms and his treatment of conditions such as typhoid fever, paralysis, apoplexy, reactions to vaccines, and fractures cysts. His patients were residents of Nantucket or seamen who came into Nantucket on ships. Among those persons treated were: Charles Albert; William Henry, New York City, 2nd Mate; Charlotte Andrews; Horace Hewitt; Mary Chase Barnard; Sarah Kingsley; Obed Chase; Samuel Mitchell; George Coggeshall; George Parker; Benjamin Folger II; Stephen Parker; Moses Folger; Rebecca B. Swain; Sarah Folger; Sarah Swain; Emily C. Gardner; Henry Swan; Temperance Green; Jared W. Tracy. Membership card in New England Protective Union, 16 June 1856.
