About this book
MS377: Thomas A. Weston Scrapbook
Author: Weston, Thomas A.
Year: 1878
Description "Scrap Book compiled by Mr. Thomas A--- Weston when he first visited Asheville in 1878 and bought the 'Rock Hall' estate of 400 acres, near Arden, N.C." --page 2 of scrapbook. This scrapbook contains clippings about Asheville from a variety of newspapers. Topics include the French Broad River, railroads, forests, geology, fruits, sheep, and natural attractions in the region. A photo of Calvary Church is included, and there is a section of pressed leaves in the center. Sources are seldom named and articles seldom attributed; dates are sometimes included. A search using www.newspapers.com shows that the unattributed article about Asheville on p. 1 originally appeared in the Raleigh Observer under the label "Editorial Correspondence" and was then reprinted in the Asheville Weekly Citizen. A page of engravings was clipped from Harper's Weekly, and a geology bulletin, "Extracts from the Report of Professor W.C. Kerr" is included. A pamphlet, "Weston's Patents, 1854-1902" lists the tools he developed. Citation Thomas A. Weston Scrapbook, Buncombe County Special Collections, Pack Memorial Library, Asheville, NC.
