First edition, one of twelve (?) copies printed on large paper (see handwritten note on page opposite to title page). Book label “This book is Bishop Cilmour’s and after his death belongs to Seminary Library, Cleveland” on front pastedown. Inscribed by the publisher to John Strang; inscription partly covered by pasted-in book review in Saturday Review (February 6 1875). This magnum opus by the distinguished collector and editor William Motherwell (1797-1835) contains a forgery, ‘The Cavalier’s Song’, attributed by J. A. Farrer (Literary forgeries. London and New York, 1907, pp. 264-65) to Motherwell himself.
