The Preface to the First Edition said "This volume is intended to form one of Gale & Polden's "Military Series," and is specially prepared to assist Officers reading for the Promotion Examination; the subject has, therefore, been dealt with entirely from that point of view and closely follows the Syllabus laid down in Queen's Regulations, Appendix VII.
