Plate of Archibald, Earl of Eglinton on front endpaper; shelfmark “Division 7, shelf C, no. 1” on back endpaper. First English translation of the ‘Letter from St Helena,’ the best-selling Manuscrit venu de Sainte-Hélène d’une manière inconnue (London, 1817, see Bib# 4102975/Fr# 1340), which purported to be Napoleon’s own personal and political testament. Instantly banned in France, and long suspected to be the work of Mme de Staël, it was confessed to years later by Frédéric Lullin de Châteauvieux–although a recent editor of Napoleon’s own marked-up copy (Paris, 1974, see Bib# 4102979/Fr# 1344) disputes Lullin’s authorship.
